Use your Voice and A.I. to Kickstart your Writing

by Thom Hiatt

If you occasionally have writer’s block or simply dislike typing, consider using your own voice (plus a little help from artificial intelligence) to write your next letter, brochure or presentation!

In this article, you will learn to speak directly into a Google Document. Google will turn your voice into text on the screen. You’ll copy your new text and paste it into ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool. ChatGPT will rewrite your text into a professional format, free of grammar and spelling errors. Let’s get started.

  • Log into your Google account, Gmail, or Google Drive
  • Start a new Google Drive Doc, or in your browser go to http://doc.new
  • In the Google Doc menu, choose Tools > Voice Typing
  • A microphone icon will show on your screen
  • Click the microphone icon, and it will turn red
  • Now just speak whatever is on your mind. It does not matter if you don’t seem to be making sense, or if you are going off on tangents. Just start talking to your computer, and don’t worry about capitalization, grammar, or creating new paragraphs.

For example, say:

Our organization was founded in 1956 by Jim and Susan Kramer. they decided that they wanted to help the community by creating small groups of dedicated individuals who want to teach children about the power of exercise  and eating right. the interest in the community was great, and before long many volunteers came together to take on leadership roles and find new members. it wasn’t long before they realized they needed funding to support the growing organization. they needed money to pay for office supplies and telephone Communications and postage stamps so they could reach out to more people in the community. so they started a fundraiser which has become an annual tradition. at first it was a simple bake sale, and now it is one of the largest Statewide sales of homemade Goods in all of america. In 1971 the organization split into two wings which includes the development of healthy snacks, and also exercise for the entire family. By 1980 the exercise wing became one of the fastest growing non-profit membership gyms in California. Growth continued during the 1990s, and the chain of gymnasiums was sold for 6.2 billion dollars. is now one of the largest gymnasium companies in the world. the department in control of snacks now supplies more than 57 million individual treats to over 13,000 retailers per year. 92% of all revenue goes back to the community.

  • Now highlight and copy all of the text that you created with your voice
  • Next, go to https://chat.openai.com/chat (you may need to create a free account or log in)
  • In the prompt box at the bottom of the screen, you need to give it a direction, or tell it what you want

For example, type / paste:

rewrite this as text for a brochure: Our organization was founded in 1956 by Jim and Susan Kramer. they decided that they wanted to help the community by creating small groups of dedicated individuals who want to teach children about the power of exercise  and eating right. the interest in the community was great, and before long many volunteers came together to take on leadership roles and find new members. it wasn’t long before they realized they needed funding to support the growing organization. they needed money to pay for office supplies and telephone Communications and postage stamps so they could reach out to more people in the community. so they started a fundraiser which has become an annual tradition. at first it was a simple bake sale, and now it is one of the largest Statewide sales of homemade Goods in all of america. ChatGPT will reply with your text, but re-formatted into paragraphs, and with perfect grammar and spelling!

Welcome to our organization, founded in 1956 by Jim and Susan Kramer with the goal of improving the community through education and exercise. Our dedicated team of volunteers and leaders have helped us grow into one of the largest statewide providers of homemade goods through our annual fundraiser. In 1971, we expanded to include not only exercise but also the development of healthy snacks for the entire family.

By 1980, our exercise program had become one of the fastest growing non-profit membership gyms in California. Our continued growth throughout the 90s led to the sale of our chain of gymnasiums for $6.2 billion, making it one of the largest gymnasium companies in the world.

Our snack department now supplies more than 57 million individual treats to over 13,000 retailers annually, and we are proud to say that 92% of all revenue goes back to the community. Join us in our mission to promote healthy living and make a positive impact on your community.

After just a few minutes of work, you are nearly finished. Now all you have to do is copy your text in ChatGPT and paste it into your letter, flier, or brochure. Double-check the text for accuracy, and use your keyboard to make any additions or adjustments.

If you want to have a little more fun, return to ChatGPT and give it some new prompts, like one of these examples:

  • Rewrite it, but limit it to 200 words
  • Rewrite it, but in the style of olde english
  • Rewrite it, but in the style of a college professor
  • Rewrite it, but use words with fewer syllables
  • Rewrite it using olde english for a college professor

The last sample prompt above created the following, um, interesting text:

Our esteemed organization, founded in the year of our Lord 1956 by James and Susan Kramer, was established with the benevolent intent of assisting the community through the formation of small, dedicated coteries whose purpose was to instruct young ones on the significance of exertion and proper sustenance. The community responded with alacrity, and ere long a plethora of volunteers coalesced to assume leadership roles and recruit new members.

It was not long before it became apparent that funding was required to support the burgeoning organization. Monies were needed for the procurement of office supplies, as well as for the maintenance of telephone communication and the dispatch of correspondence, in order to reach a greater number of individuals within the community. Hence, a fundraiser was instituted, which has since become an annual tradition. Initially, it was a simple bake sale, but it has since grown to become one of the largest statewide sales of homemade comestibles in the entire nation.

In the year 1971, the organization was divided into two wings; one for the development of healthy snacks, and the other for the promotion of exercise for the entire family. By the year 1980, the wing dedicated to exercise had become one of the most rapidly expanding non-profit membership gymnasiums in the state of California.

Growth persisted during the decade of the 1990s, and the chain of gymnasiums was sold for a sum of 6.2 billion dollars, thus rendering the organization one of the largest gymnasium companies in the world.

The department responsible for snacks now supplies more than 57 million individual treats to over 13,000 retailers per annum. It is with great pride that we state that 92% of all revenue is returned to the community.

Let’s face it. Not everyone is a skilled writer. But thanks to modern technology, you can use your voice to express your thoughts onto “paper,” then use artificial intelligence to properly format your words for others to enjoy.
